Iain Robert Smith is a Lecturer in Film at Roehampton University. His recently completed doctoral thesis, The Hollywood Meme: Transnational Appropriation of US Film and Television, explores the myriad ways in which iconic elements of American popular culture have been borrowed and transformed in other national contexts.
He has published articles on this theme in Velvet Light Trap and Portal: Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies and has edited a book length special issue of the journal Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies entitled Cultural Borrowings: Appropriation, Reworking, Transformation.
