Reader in early modern history
Digby Stuart
About
I studied history at Balliol College, Oxford where I completed a doctorate on oaths of allegiance in seventeenth-century England. In 2000 I was appointed De Velling Willis Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield. Since then I have taught at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool. In September 2009 I took up my post as Reader in Early Modern History at Roehampton.
My research interests are in seventeenth-century British history, especially the civil wars and the revolution of 1688-9. I am also interested in the history of British radical movements, particularly during the mid-century revolution. Along side this work, I have published on the history of casuistry and the conscience, political allegiance, oath-taking and loyalty.
